What is Platinum Rhodium Thermocouple Wire?

Thermocouples are used for temperature sensors and can also be used to convert heat into electric power. Platinum Thermocouples are comprised of a junction of two different metals which produce a voltage related to a temperature difference.

Platinum Rhodium Thermocouple wire is comprised of one leg of pure 999 platinum, and the other leg is made of a platinum/rhodium alloy.

The Platinum/Rhodium alloy leg is stiffer than the pure platinum leg. The mix of Platinum to Rhodium is dependent on the specific application of the wire. As such, there are many different types of wire, some of the more common types include:

  1. Type B Thermocouple Wire – 94% Pt, 6% Rh
  2. Type S Thermocouple Wire – 90% Pt, 10% Rh
  3. Type R Thermocouple Wire – 87% Pt, 13% Rh
